Anti-gay-marriage ad misleading, mostly false

It's misleading to say "virtually all" benefits of marriage exist for domestic partners under law, because there are many references to "spouses" in state law. Surely individual changes to law could be made to address them if legislators choose to do so, but approving gay marriage would allow couples to take advantage of that language in one swoop....

Opinions vary on how to word Maine's same-sex marriage ballot question

Summers received 662 public comments, which fall roughly into four categories: keep it as is (197), change it so voters know it will redefine marriage (140), change it to include wording about the religious exemption (293), and random responses (32) that were mostly opinions about same-sex marriage, not the wording of the question, according to statistics from the Secretary of State's Office and a...

Married and family in all but name

In its endless quest to honor its Dirigo motto, Maine will soon have a chance to become the first state to legislate marriage equality. And so I've been thinking lately about the gay couple I've known the best and certainly the longest. Anna died in 1983 at age 90; Ruby, 12 years younger, passed on recently just short of 100. They had been together, in that confined way society permitted, since t...

Gay marriage likely to return

The advocacy group Equality Maine is ramping up its game, after three years of a low-key public education campaign to highlight gay and lesbian issues. And in opposition, a new group, the Maine Marriage Alliance, is pushing for an amendment to the state constitution that would define marriage as being between a man and a woman....
