Opponents of gay marriage include the Catholic Conference of Illinois, which recently created a Defense of Marriage Department within the organization. The department is headed by Zach Wichmann, who said Hoffman isn't alone in his differing views on civil unions and gay marriage.
"I've heard the same thing from other legislators, that they view civil unions as kind of a contractual arrangement, and marriage as something more than that," Wichmann said.
