Dec 6, 2010: Tons of Cliffhangers: This Week in Prop 8 for December 6, 2010

It's showtime! Monday's the day for oral arguments in the next phase of Perry vs. Schwarzenegger, the legal challenge to Prop 8 that may one day reach the Supreme Court of the United States.

The arguments will be heard by three randomly-picked judges: one is liberal, one is moderate but favors equality, and one is probably a Mormon. The anti-gay groups wanted the liberal judge to remove himself, but he refused. Nobody asked the probable-Mormon to remove himself.

At this point, we have a better-than-neutral chance of winning this phase, but it's a pretty volatile case so it's impossible to predict what will happen. The case could proceed to the Supreme Court, or it could go backwards and start over.

With all this excitement going on, you might not have noticed that Geoff Kors is stepping down from Equality California. That's big news -- he's been the head of the state's largest equality organization for what seems like forever, and his departure follows that of Marriage Director Marc Solomon. There were rumors that EQCA is planning to close up shop, but it seems more likely that they're just re-structuring. Probably.
