Dec 20, 2010: New Warning Shots Fired for Gay Marriage: This Week in Prop 8 for December 20, 2010
As the Prop 8 case continues to percolate behind closed doors at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, activists aren't content to wait. First, there was an excellent explanation this week of "The Best Argument Against Gay Marriage -- and why it fails." The short version is that the anti-gay side is pulling out a last-minute, desperate argument for marriage discrimination that hinges on procreation. But it's full of holes, including straight couples who are infertile and adopt. David Boies, meanwhile, popped up on the Colbert Report to offer a little comic relief from the stress of last week. But the biggest news came on Sunday, with the announcement of a brand new organization: Equality Matters, a "communications way room for gay equality," primed and ready to fight for marriage. There's some very heavy hitters backing this group, and now they have the momentum of the recent repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell in Congress. The organization's plan is to act as a rapid response team to get the message out in the mass media about ending discrimination. Their first small test will be their reaction to coverage of DADT repeal, but with a Prop 8 verdict expected this spring, they'll likely need to be firing on all cylinders very very soon. |
