Oct 25, 2010: Will California's New Leaders Side with the Bigots? This Week in Prop 8 for Monday, October 25, 2010.
It's been a quiet week on the Prop 8 front, but it's the calm before the storm: all eyes are on the fast-approaching election, when California's current pro-equality legislators may be replaced by anti-gay bigots. Meg Whitman, Abel Maldonado, and Steve Cooley are the Republican candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General, respectively. All three have explicitly expressed their belief in "heterosexual supremacy," the idea that straight couples are inherently better than gay ones. If they win, it'll bolster Prop 8's strength in court. Or will it? A fundamental component of the case against Prop 8 is the fact that it is based on irrational anti-gay animus, rather than on any legitimate legislative purpose. Ultimately, the prejudices espoused by Whitman, Maldonado, and Cooley may be the undoing of the anti-marriage ban. |
