Jul 5, 2010: It's Getting Tense: This Week in Prop 8 for July 5, 2010
There's still no word from Judge Walker on Perry v. Schwarzenegger -- those pins and needles we're all sitting on are starting to hurt! But that hasn't stopped folks from reflecting back on the case and making optimistic predictions about how the US Supreme Court will eventually rule, when and if the case makes it to them. One promising sign: SCOTUS's decision in Christian Legal Society v. Martinez, which upheld the view that LGBTs can be protected from discrimination. It's a very different case from the Prop 8 challenge, but what signs are there are encouraging. So encouraging, in fact, that our side in Perry v. Schwarzenegger sent a note to Judge Walker to point them out. Meanwhile, a few feathers were ruffled by an editorial by (gay, married) Jonathan Rauch, in which he seems to put the arguments of the gays and anti-gays on equal footing, and disregards the merits on each side's arguments in favor of a perfectly even "compromise." Oh no she didn't. |
