Jun 14, 2010: Justin Long and Lawyers: This Week in Prop 8 for June 14, 2010
This is it! Get ready for closing arguments in the Prop 8 case. We're counting down the last few seconds on the clock before everyone reunites in court to plead their final case. One one side, there's the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which named two new advisory board co-chairs last week: John Podesta and Robert Levy. They're ideological opposites, a libertarian and a progressive, but they agree that equal marriage is a non-partisan issue. AFER attorney Ted Olson hosted a conference call in which he gave a preview of their closing arguments. To sum up: gays are victims, discrimination is wrong, and it's the court's duty to ensure equal protection. And did you see that delightful "Overturn Prop 8 an Make Homosexuals Marry" video, starring Mike White and Justin Long? (Yes, THAT Justin Long -- apparently Macs really are gay computers.) In the end, it's cute videos like this that will hasten equal marriage, since every conversation brings us one step closer to winning a majority of public opinion. So keep forwarding videos like these! The more people see gays -- real gays, not the weird imaginary predators that anti-gays like to depict -- the more comfortable they will be with gays getting married. |
