Jun 21, 2010: Closing Arguments: This Week in Prop 8 for 6/21/10
It's a wrap: This week, we heard closing arguments in Perry vs Schwarzenegger, and now Judge Walker could rule at any moment. There was only one last-minute surprise: the Prop 8 proponents asked the judge to invalidate the 18,000 marriages that took place when it was legal. The chances of that happening are, to put it nicely, slim. The proponents put up so many weak arguments that it's looking like the gays have a good shot at winning this round. In other news, a study came out about ballot initiatives to ban gay couples from marrying. You'll probably not be too shocked by the findings: that such campaigns are difficult, the polling is inaccurate, and most minds are changed way in advance of the actual election. That means that the work being done outside of election season by organizations like Courage Campaign and EQCA is super-duper important. So support them! |
