May 4, 2010: The Clock is Ticking: This Week in Prop 8 for May 4, 2010
Are you on the edge of your seat yet? The last few days have been all about suspense! Mystery! And secret documents! The big news, of course, is that we finally have a date for closing arguments in the Prop 8 trial, Perry vs Schwarzenegger. (I will be very happy when the day comes that I do not have to remember how to spell that name anymore.) It's June 16th, a Wednesday, and there's no telling how soon afterwards the judge will rule. But every indication so far has been that he wants to move as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, Courage Campaign launched a fundraising drive for a new project called "Testimony: Equality on Trial." Here's the tricky part: although they're telling everyone that it's going to be great, they aren't telling anyone exactly what it is, which probably makes it tough to raise money for it. But Courage Campaign is always spot on with their media projects -- remember the "Don't Divorce" video? (Except when they're not -- remember "Home Invasion"?) Our best guess is that "Testimony" is going to be a moving look at the lives of families affected by Prop 8. Sound familiar? What we don't think CC is planning is a straight-up recreation of the Prop 8 trial based on transcripts. That's already being done; and, in an accurate reflection of the nature of the wheels of justice, it's so technical and complicated that it's pretty hard to watch. Two other major civil rights groups were in the news this week: the ACLU and Equality California. They'd been holding on to some secret emails that their opponents had demanded; and even though those documents are of arguable relevance to the lawsuit, the court ruled that they had to hand them over. With less than a day to go before they were to be cited in contempt, ACLU and EQCA both relented. No word yet on when we'll get a look at what's in those documents; but it's likely to come up in the closing arguments next month, so stay tuned. |
