May 10, 2010: One Case Wraps up While Another Begins: This Week in Prop 8 for May 10, 2010
David Boies sure is Mister Popular lately: normally too hard at work on the case against Prop 8 to give interviews, he popped up in multiple venues this week to do interviews. I don't know if you could really use the word "gleeful" to describe his demeanor, but he certainly sounds upbeat when he talks about the anti-gay side's worst witness, Dr. Hak Shing "William" Tam. Tam was so outlandish and so damaging to the anti-gays' case that they're doing everything they can to get his testimony stricken from the record; but their chances aren't great, since Judge Walker seems to be determined to have as comprehensive a record as possible. Meanwhile, across the country in Boston, a court is hearing a case against DOMA. One one side: gay retirees and widows, denied benefits by the government. On the other side: the Obama administration, which claims to be a "staunch advocate" for LGBTs but has a funny way of showing it. Now that closing arguments have ended, the case is in the hands of Judge Joseph Tauro. He'll be deciding sometime -- nobody knows when -- whether the case can proceed. So it's possible we may have two big rulings around the same time: one on Prop 8, and another on DOMA. |
