According to Splaine, the major problem with the civil union law is that there is "no way" a civil union will give same-gendered couples the same rights as married heterosexual couples in all circumstances because of a gray area in the law that's up for interpretation. For instance, individual businesses don't need to provide the same benefits and contracts for civil union couples that they do with married couples.
